Moments in the Mirror

Moments in the Mirror is a sanctuary for reflection, where lasting change begins with a single moment of recognition.

Hosted by Bonnieanne Ray, RN, MN, each episode invites you to pause long enough to see yourself more clearly. Through honest storytelling, thoughtful reflection, and insights informed by psychotherapy, Bonnieanne explores the patterns, beliefs, relationships, and life experiences that quietly shape who we become.

Rather than offering quick fixes or easy answers, Moments in the Mirror creates space for curiosity, compassion, and deeper understanding. Because healing doesn't begin when we have all the answers—it begins the moment we see ourselves clearly.

Today I share a deeply personal story of estrangement, grief, and an unexpected reunion with my mother after years apart.
I describe sending audio messages, receiving a sincere apology, and how healing came from setting boundaries and accepting truth—not by forcing forgiveness.
This episode explores how reconciliation can happen on new terms, and how reclaiming your own worth is the real path to peace.

In this episode, I share a deeply personal realization about a lifelong pattern I didn't even know I had. Growing up, I learned to pay close attention to everyone else's emotions needs, and expectations.  It was a survival strategy that quietly followed me into adulthood.
I explore how childhood adaptations can become invisible patterns, why awareness often arises with shame and how healing begins not by judging ourselves, but by seeing ourselves with compassion.

Bonnieanne Ray shares how stepping away from a high-pressure career and a forced period of stillness after surgery revealed long-buried trauma and chronic anxiety. Drawing from childhood instability and past medical vulnerability, she describes how hypervigilance can make safety feel like a threat.
She offers simple, somatic coping strategies—anchoring to the presence of a loved one, speaking truth to the body, and practicing self-compassion—and invites listeners to reflect on whether they are truly safe and to be gentle with themselves through messy healing.

I continue my exploration of the glass ceiling pattern. In part one, I named this pattern and recognized it as a protective strategy I developed to ensure I belonged. Today, I am moving. beyond intellectual understanding into the work of integration.
I share my journey of identifying the "approval reflex" - that automatic physical urge to soften my voice and shrink my presence to avoid the risk of rejection. I discuss the contrast between this protective contraction and the expansive, alive feeling that arises when I choose to take up space and speak with clarity.
This episode is an invitation to look in the mirror and build the nervous system;s capacity to tolerate our own expansion. I share what helped me choose alignment over the need to be liked, and I reflect on what it means to finally stand in my own authority without the fear that being fully myself will cost me my sense of belonging.

Host Bonnieanne Ray shares her deeply honest journey exploring the persistent "glass ceiling pattern" that has led to two distinct self-sabotaging behaviours: shrinking into quiet meekness as a way of hiding, or excessively over-exerting herself as a way of covering up perceived errors. Both of these actions ultimately leave her feeling diminished and prevent her from reaching her true potential. This episode focuses on defining the core lie that drives this cycle, and through her personal story of recognizing the pattern, offers listeners a powerful lesson in courage, vulnerability, and taking the first step toward transcending one's limitations.
